DOWNLOAD: Seeing Suge - Breaking (Blackbird Blackbird, Emay & Starslinger)
Three way collaborative release between Blackbird Blackbird, Starslinger and Emay that goes against current conventions and pitches UP a Memoryhouse sample, floating it on a gently epic production, with the first chillwave rapping ever from Emay, his gentle voice and softly rolling rhythm fitting sweetly onto the cloudy beats. After the lead track each artists gets their own piece to flex on and things get slightly unhinged from thereonout - a glitched Artha Franklin sample, some muddied ambience and over tweaked pitchshifting make the four track trip well worth a spin.

DOWNLOAD: Kohwi 's Psychedelic Sleep Music
Kohwi is the one man band moniker of Cory Levinson, an enigmatic sound manipulator from Ann Arbor Michigan who describes his work as 'psychedelic sleep music' - which may be one neat way to sidestep the Hypnagogic word, because it does fit into both quite elegantly. His music is created by disrupting the time continuum with disorientated splicing and fx reworkings of olde vynal samples, melting the original forms into slowed and skewed landscapes populated by fleeting beats and glitches in the matrix. For me, it's a little too lively to sleep too, but his work has a pillowy soft aura around it that finishes the new electronics with a matt pallor to allow them to naturally commune with the muted crackling of the old vinyl.
All his releases are available to download for free from his Bandcamp: There's the most recent single track Tides, which immediately deploys an arresting guitar strut then quickly begins unpicking it and destabilising any foundations you thought you'd settled on:
June's double track REM/Play With Me comes from an equally left field; the first song is a bit more minimalist while the second deploys a whole lotta vinyl samples:
Finally, he has a beautifully flickering remix of Blackbird Blackbird's Pure than harmonises Kohwi's fondness for glitched stutters with the swooning prettiness of the original.

DOWNLOAD: Cults - Cults 7"
And here it is. My Cults obsession. Another genuinely inspiring gem from the Gorilla Vs. Bear label Forest Family. New York boy/girl two piece, slickly Motown, and sugary like the sweetest Spector Pop. Awesome. Think free, loose and sweatily sensual experiences - ephemeral, transient, tangible.
This kind of stuff, I have recently realised, is made all the more potent by it's limitations, the consciousness of its disposability and sense of finity. Pop music succeeds when it harnesses it's brevity, when it injects every ounce of energy and enthusiasm into each moment of it's brief life with the understanding that this is all the time it will have on Earth, like a mayfly that once hatched has to outperform itself in a perfectly executed performance of existence. If Pop music and it's practitioners cannot submit to their fatality of their art and reproduce that urgency within their music then they are cheating us all.
This is that 24 hour artistic perfection smashed onto tape.
You an download their full Cults 7" ep totally free from their BANDCAMP,or order the real life shellac from the label.

Beko Records - Modern Witch / Mater Suspiria Vision / Madame O und Ihre Kopffilm Bande Split ep
Here at Not For Resale we love a good netlabel - quality free music is always welcome round our place - so what happens if that music also comes with some awesome artwork and a tidy horizontally slidy website? Well, we blow our top that's what.
Beko Records - http://www.beko-dsl.com- is a singles label offering free downloadable releases from a range of genred artists and they have a nice line in 2D block colour sleeve designs too.
Prettypretty artworks and lots of great releases; Memoryhouse, Wild Safari, Idiot Glee, Hanging Coffins – all cool! And loads more too, all free.
They have just released their first split single, called Beko Box 1, featuring Modern Witch, Mater Suspiria Vision and Madame O und Ihre Kopffilm Bande (XH of Mater Suspiria Vision and Cosmotropia de Xam)

The Mater Suspiria track is as you'd expect; Layers and phases of heavy reverb ghost drone delay strung up and freaked out to the max - same goes for the Cosmotropia collaboration too. But it's the Modern Witch track Cinema that breaks the mould and sends chills down the spine. It's utter genius. A dark groove locked down into a twisting cycle that shifts into some hi-frequency atmospheric spaces. It's a lot more hi-fidelity than their previous releases, and certainly a lot more 'House'. This is the sound of Witch House developing into a more interesting dimension. Between Balam Acab and this track, the next phase of this genre may well be happening right now.

DOWNLOAD: Thee Oh Sees - I Was Denied
Mainstays on the NFR stereo, Thee Oh Sees are a band that can just do no wrong. It's hard to fail with such a solid base of garage noise rock, and John Dwyer is the best man for the sound (We have an awesome Dwyer related special post coming up in about a month - its been a long time in the making, getting honed to perfection, so you will want to stay tuned for that, we promise).
Their fourth album proper Weird Slime, is released on May 11th on In The Red and to trail it they've given out I Was Denied as a free teaser (garage rock + new technology - a juxtaposition I'm not sure will ever sit that conmfortably for us, but one we won't complain about).
It's The Oh Sees as loose, low slung and chaotically mean as ever.

DOWNLOAD: Natural Snow Buildings - The Centauri Agent
Vulpiano Records is a relatively new web-based community label, run by Marilyn Roxie, that offers as many of their artists releases for free as possible. Each Vulpiano artist has at least one album, EP, or single for free download. The label is mainly folk or electronic-oriented, though the sounds within just one of their artists albums may stray beyond those boundaries; a label roster united more appropriately by a spirit of independence and experimentation.
The thirteenth release on the label is from a band who we have long admired - and paid a lod of money for too! Last year's Shadow Kingdom album being one of our all time favourite packages.
VULP-0013 is Natural Snow Buildings’ first release of 2010, the free-for-download double LP TheCentauri Agent! On Part One, the 41 minute Our man from Centauri sets the stage, a cosmic, sprawling opener with themes that continue on into The accidental remote viewer, before fizzling out into static. Part Two is comprised of nine beautiful and intense tracks (particular stand-outs including The Psychic Circle/Uchronia, The storm of resurrection, and Solar flares). Lovely and intricately woven as ever, while frequently heading off into new and challenging sonic territory, Mehdi and Solange have created yet another very special work of musical art with The Centauri Agent!

New Pocahaunted Album & Preview Track

The first full record from 5-piece Pocahaunted is almost upon us - the album is called Make It Real and will be released on Not Not Fun in the near future - and they've put out Save Yourself (It's Nice) as a jungle dream trip teaser of a free track to download.
We've been waiting for any kind of recorded output from this new incarnation since last July, which in Pocahaunted release months is about 7 years! Too long in other words. Understandable though, as jamming stuff out as a duo is a different thing entirely to 5 members getting tight - especially when you are including the wild buzz baked organ psych king Cameron Stallone aka Sun Araw in your ranks.
Immediately in stark contrast to the languid murky throbbing of old, this preview track immediately jumps into life as a twitchy groove with flailing guitars and ripping organ flourishes, winding down over its 8 minutes into an ethereal cosmic stew of drum flurries and organ pulses.
As you can see for yourselves, the album art is an ultra fried headfuck.

And for all our our readers lucky enough to be hitchin' over to SXSW this year, the NOT NOT FUN showcase show is Friday 19th March at The Hideout, with these bands.

Yeah, our third eye popped out it's socket seeing that line up too.

Free Liars 'Scissor' Download

The first signs of the new Liars album 'Sisterworld' are starting to leak onto the web and it surely won't be long before the album itself makes it out there so make the most of the increasing tension, excitement and old fashioned pre-release fervour while you can. It's due out in March and they are giving away the opening track Scissor free on their website.
DOWNLOAD HERE
After starting with some eeire, dreamy delayed vocals about transient distance and journeying it doesn't take long before it smashes the sound barrier with a pretty rugged, rocking almost Metal riff that wrestles itself like its strait-jacketed. The distant dreamy quietness comes in, get's blown out again and then it ends. As an album opener it sounds as potent as Plastercasts of Everything - though if we're dodging any exitable hysteria we'd more honestly say we prefer Plastercasts. You can decide for yourself.
As you can see from the traclisting, there'es soem pretty gnarly, canckerous 'They Were Wrong...' kind of track titles.
1. "Scissor"
2. "No Barrier Fun"
3. "Here Comes All The People"
4. "Drip"
5. "Scarecrows On A Killer Slant"
6. "I Still Can See An Outside World"
7. "Proud Evolution"
8. "Drop Dead"
9. "The Overachievers"
10. "Goodnight Everything"
11. "Too Much, Too Much"
Sounds pretty killer to us. Looking forward to it.

REVIEW: Island of Raiell - Ab Initio

The band insist that the album should be heard comfortably reclined, immersed in low mood lighting - but that's implicit from the opening hum; the eerie atmosphere this album exudes makes it sound like it was recorded in halflight and shadow. Anyone familiar with the kinds of resonance heavy ambient soundscapes that Deleted Scenes, Forgotten Dreams regularly throw out will find a lot to engage with during this album. Although it certainly begins with them, across it's nine individually titled movements the album quickly progresses beyond the murky abstract aquatics suggested by the cover into movements similar to the rhythmic chanting of Pocahaunted; spectral churn of Religious Knives and forlorn anthems of Kate Bush. Distant drums echo, voices surface and fade like the suggestions of ripples over heavy water. There's a dread sentiment to this story of a drowned sailor and it's sung by two sirens beckoning a wider audience toward their aquatic embrace.
We have the third section, Rock & Wave for you to download as a teaser. It features an unsettlingly slow and doomy piano lead that literally does come back later to haunt you.
DOWNLOAD: Rock & Wave
The most strikingly dramatic section to the piece arrives with Black Wave in the form of a blast of Middle Eastern horns, a crashing torrent of noise and a harsh shriek - it's a peak in violence that represents the last gasp of the central character before he slips under the waves; an event that leads towards the next highlight of the album - a choral passage titled Lie Beneath that rises from whispering ambience at around 30 minutes, then that slow, heavy-lidded grim-robed piano refrain comes back in accompanied by a backwards sounding buzzing and faint traces of reappearing choir.
It's a record designed to disturb and enchant all at once, and it succeeds with absorbingly fine attention to detail and involving yet unforced narrative structure.
