DOWNLOAD: Head in Body - Not So Empty EP

Head In Body
Not So Empty
DOWNLOAD

Released in a run of 20 CDr copies and available as a free download from the Czech label KLaNGundKRaCH Records Head In Body's Not So Empty ep is a fairly fucked up cryptic noise-improv missive offerd up from deep within the bowels of the Prague underground, then released to stalk you out the club, down the darkest alleys and round the back of your house.

The first track is vocal gibberish, the second is an utterly creeped out take on Suicide, scrawling Frankie Teardrop style jibbering with a scratchy ring-modulated ghost-over scratched surface. This EP features four full pieces of looped codeine induced heart attacks, delayed gestures, neutral vibrations, real sound tears and one solo consisting of several attempts to connect a cable into a bass. Tone Hand offers up some semblance of pulse and groove, tempered with a cold-hearted edge like Cold Cave, a lot of loose atmosphere and haunted air, suspended feedback and dunk-tank distortion.

They played their first show in 2008, opening for the revered Italian sludge couple OvO, then spent "almost a year waiting for another tired person and a better mask" until the dubiously named character 'My Sister Is Pregnant' joined in October 2009 for Prague based Stimul festival. After that, the neuroticism partly hidden in early lo-fi tracks burst into a flower. The duo have shared further stages with Pansonic, Guma Guar, U.S. Girls, Noayde, or No.Pavarotti and ClapsClap at the Creepy Teepee festival earlier this summer.

This stuff is necessary.

Here's the tracklist, and just in case you missed it up there, download this madness from HERE

Joris J is a Berlin based noise artist who produces quietly harsh ambient soundscapes that slowly mutate and develop like bacteria cultures across the speakers. He also runs a music and literary oriented English/German language blog called Goat Germs, devoted to the similar styles of his music. The appropriately titled experimental electronics net label Weird and Wired have put out his six-track Fresco, Focal, Fratricide album as a free download.

The album begins with a translucent electronic shimmer in a track titled as a cultural signpost to the political background of the album -  November 22, 1987, references the date Bryce Lynch hacked into a Chicago broadcast of the Nine O´Clock News and Horror of FangRock replacing them with a cyber-punk transmission from Max Headroom.  The album slowly grows from this seed of insurrection through the po-faced comedy of the 28 second Nearly Half A Minute into the Ben Frost like seismic eruptions of barely contained violent energy in Sheet of Corrugated Metal.  The album closes with the nicely weighted seesawing tidal sine drone of Waiting for Mount Analogue slowly drawing the tension away from the previous track and easing the tense pressure out like a whole Stars of The Lid album.  At just of half an hour, it has a compactness that other artists might forsake through teasing out these same pieces for over twice as long, and as speculative an accolade as that is, this album's success is in it's coherence of which that brief running time plays it's important part - each track stays for just long enough to take effect then it's out. A lesson learned from the hackers that inspired it.

Anji Cheung is a name you should be getting used to seeing on this blog; not too long ago I posted up a review and sample track of the aquatic-oriented concept album she recorded as Island of Raiell with Lou Keech; then Vessel of the Earth, a bleak and turbulent dronescape with the Belgium based dark ambient artist Sequences. Ghosts of Dead Lords is Anji's second solo album and it's been self-released as a free download.
Tracklist:
01 – Rejoice
02 - Hall of the Mountain King
03 - Caer Caradoc
04 - Argument of Periastron
05 - Hava Ag Puja
06 – Alvajocanto
07 – Zhang

Anji played and produced all instruments and sounds on the album, except for the vokkils on the opening track Rejoice. Contacting her friend Ghaith, aka Grief, from Art of Burning Water to throw down a range of screeching, hissing and growling was an inspired decision as the steadily intensifying layers encroach on the light of the track, twisting it from it's refined beginnings as a piano note studded atmospheric doom piece, towards a raging deranged finish. It's an arresting opener, setting the scene for an album that shifts gracefully through styles on the heavy side of ambient; Hall of the Muntain King features gently cooing vocals and a singing bowl-like ringing that sounds like early early Pocahaunted, Argument of Periastron returns the sound to a dense caustic buzz as a pealing chime slowly swirls around the advancing swell of doom riffing that rises out of the murk at a geological pace.  The steady progression of the tracks teases out an absorbing the interplay between obfuscated vocals, modulated frequencies and seismic riffing in a very West Coast fashion, with maybe tainted more true Metallic than the Bay Area psych scene but this comes highly recommended for people who dig the murkiest Not Not Fun jams.

PREORDER: Islet - Wimmy

I am just discovering Islet . They're quite a propulsive, rhythm heavy take on post-indie-rock, although that's as weak a dropped genre as any and doesn't explain their sound so much, but it's a sound that certainly takes a lead from the epic scope of the Explosions In The Sky or And So I Watch You From Afar's of this world, whilst also retaining a very Indie sensibility at it's core - illustrated by recent tour dates with Los Campesinos! It's the vocal deliveries that lock them down into the realm of indie, but there's so much other stuff going on it runs off as a free-flowing hybrid of tone and dynamics influenced by everyone from Can to Campesionos.

A mini-album titled Wimmy is due for release as a 12" & download on 11th October from Shape Records (Turnstile).  You can download the free teaser track Ringerz HERE which has the feel of Afrirampo in the shuddering delay of H.Hawkline's yelped vocals.

Here's another, slightly different, insight into the bands sound from that last ep Celebrate This Place, that was released this summer.

They have no MySpace, but that's no big deal no more, they're ahead of the game there. No new bands will this time next year, for sure. ByeSpace!

DOWNLOAD: Kohwi 's Psychedelic Sleep Music

Kohwi is the one man band moniker of Cory Levinson, an enigmatic sound manipulator from Ann Arbor Michigan who describes his work as 'psychedelic sleep music' - which may be one neat way to sidestep the Hypnagogic word, because it does fit into both quite elegantly.  His music is created by disrupting the time continuum with disorientated splicing and fx reworkings of olde vynal samples, melting the original forms into slowed and skewed landscapes populated by fleeting beats and glitches in the matrix.  For me, it's a little too lively to sleep too, but his work has a pillowy soft aura around it that finishes the new electronics with a matt pallor to allow them to naturally commune with the muted crackling of the old vinyl.

All his releases are available to download for free from his Bandcamp:  There's the most recent single track Tides, which immediately deploys an arresting guitar strut then quickly begins unpicking it and destabilising any foundations you thought you'd settled on:

June's double track REM/Play With Me comes from an equally left field; the first song is a bit more minimalist while the second deploys a whole lotta vinyl samples:

Finally, he has a beautifully flickering remix of Blackbird Blackbird's Pure than harmonises Kohwi's fondness for glitched stutters with the swooning prettiness of the original.

Dream Boat - Visions

The internet has just lit up with the news of the debut full length album Visions from Dream Boat, released on the phenomenal Prague based AMDISCS label and available now. The label have become my highlight of the year, putting out incredible lo-fi yet hi-intensity EPs and albums that are either instantly addictive or provoke you into repeated listens that slowly crawl their way into your subconscious; the sound ranges across the current spectrum of beach-wave, witch house, hypnagogic pop and dark electronica, with a pool of artists drawn from all corners of the world. Highlights that will undoubtedly hit my end of year track and albums shortlists come from Daniel Radall,  Ghost Animal, Railcars, Pink Priest, Pears, Table, Twilight Owls, Unouomedude and Tearist.

Amazingly they release many of their artist's albums for free as well as offering them in cd and cassette form, but as big a feature as I could write about AMDISCS, this is really about one of my current obsessions; Dream Boat.

Their album contains Your Beaches from the Fevers EP which, if you've heard it, should convince you enough to part with €8 for the digital download alone - one immense track of stuttering, drum-machine groove, of claustrophic breathless euphoria kept a teasingly thin distance from total peaking; a psychological landscape of Lynchian twists and sidesteps, of Hitchcockian thrill and suspense, yet somehow that track was no one off; this album is full of the same rippling, haunted aggression and wired primitive atmospheres that characterized all their previous eps. Kissing Collar clips along with a solemn bounce, Rosary is dragged and screwed lightly enough to retain full pop glamour yet distorted enough to fetishise it's more sensual features.

The artwork too, has lost the overt provocative sexuality that defined that Jane Birkin Fevers EP cover and the mirrored nudity of True Love; although they've kept it up with the current image they're using as their band photos, this cover brings a sinister creepy edge, a black outline and blurred centre much like the music itself, all hazy visioned with steely definition. One hallmark of their sound is the gritty synth tone deployed in many of the tracks, like a subduction zone around the impact of each beat it grinds into the foreground pulling at your ears and pricking up your senses like an organic klaxon pulsing out from the deep undergrowth of the occult subgenre in which they dwell; and, it has to be said, sounds fucking badass. Along with the SALEM's epic King Knight it will become one of the defining sounds of the year for me, for the witch house genre and judging from the reaction to the release of this album, many other people too.  In tracks like No Air and Your Beaches, it ploughs a filthy furrow of noise straight down the lateral-lines, like a modern take on motorik, it's a distinctive pulse through the core of the tunes that draws the focus ofattention. Elsewhere, in Coals there's a tribal element that underscroes the sense of ritualistic primitivism in the sound, percussive drums drawn in tight circles, a clattering cacophany of ceremonial hedonism that takes over the body and leads from the outside in.

Order your copy HERE where they have 4 tracks to preview too.

Last.fm Thread everyone let's talk

This week's listening in pleasureable stats form across the DiS/NFR axis

Still all about George Lewis Jr.

Don't feel like I've listened to that much music this week and the numbers in the stats reflect that.

01. Twin Shadow - 77
03. Deerhunter - 33
04. SALEM - 25
05. HOLY OTHER - 23
06. Drudkh - 20
07. Gayngs - 18
08. Stargazer - 17
10. Burl Ives - 14
10. of Montreal - 14

02 - Replicating the sounds of Rifts on my iphone synth app is going surprisingly well
03 - Got Halcyon Digest yesterday. First 3 listens have been joyous occasions. What a beautiful sounding and elegantly composed album.
04 – True dread occult euphoria
05 – I'm thinking Holy Other is this year's Joy Orbison. Similar kind of amalgamation of current sounds but a dissociation from predictability, beautifully honed toned and contoured musical narratives.
06 – new album is some awesome slow burning forest metal
08 – Profound Lore are still on form. Can't think of the last album that label put out that I haven't liked. This is to death metal what Krallice are to black metal.
09 – and this band are like nothing else.
10B – Got False Priest yesterday too, but only listened once so far because Deerhunter has been more immediately compelling

VIDEO: Holy Other - Yr Love

Cannot get enough of Holy Other at the moment, in particular this track: Yr Love. The Berlin based producer has sewn together the loose strands of current electronic music incorporating (consciously or not) hypnagogic pop, witch house, drag and ambient minimalism to create a 7" with a physically magnetic allure. It's such a beautiful slow-motion space-walk, like a Detroit street party held in orbit; layers of cosmic synths trails piling up on each other, blown to the solar winds as the soul vocals softly collide together. This video reminds me a lot of the recent Forest Swords video for Rattling Cage, it has the same washed out leached sepia tones and detached atmosphere that complements the music perfectly; as well as the religious overtones - more pertient here, what with the astral sounds of the music alluding to the glorious all-pervasive euphoris besowed upon us humalings by everyone's favourite sky friend.

FACT Magazine have also posted this extended pulsing ten-minute house remix from New York producer Physical Therapy

I'm calling Holy Other this year's Joy Orbison.
