REVIEW: Monsters Build Mean Robots - We Should Have Destroyed Our Generals And Not Their Enemies
Self released on their own Nice Weather for Airstrikes label, Monsters Build Mean Robots have finally put out their long-anticipated follow up to their 2008 self-titled debut - number 5 in my albums of the year when it emerged not long after they did, a collection of subliminally arresting electronic post-rock tracks with a dark edge of political confrontation that focussed on global Government's warcraft. On this second album their titular and lyrical leanings are still well into the left but this time they include materialism and a more personal existentialism across the five tracks. As well as embellishing their vocal potency they have also changed their musical outlook considerably. In their new incarnation there are no longer moments of sparse ambient flicker and glitch to build and direct the tensions and emotions, instead where it was once sounds sourced from the databanks of Leaf, Warp, and Kompakt, ambient signifiers that glowed throughout the tracks, here all that psychic energy is channelled through the sheer rapturous power of the guitar with reference to bands like Sigur Ros, Explosions In The Sky, and Arcade Fire.
The album features all the prominent post-rock landmarks you could need (exhaustive title included) and embellishes them with instinctive structures in miniaturised forms. No 10 minute + slow growing epics, just mini ones, bottled into pop songs. Glockenspiel fills ripple up the soaring crescendos of Song for the Generals; the progress of Lament 77 is interspersed with detailed vocal nuances, spaces in the walls of guitars where inflections and backing can slip through. The composition of the songs is assured and confident which gives the band an air of authority important if your key lyrical stock is chastising those in power and standing up as spokesperson for the disenfranchised. Spearheading the band is the voice and guitar of Pete Lambrou - whichever update of Post.Rock.V.XX we're up to now, he's at the forefront of it, putting on bands around the South and fronting both MBMR and the more rock-centric Last Days of Lorca. When he suggests that you burn down your home, in Psalm 57, you're inclined to take his lead and go through with it. He's got a real lived-in sounding set of chords, got a bit of fire to his falsetto that sets him apart from the Jonsi's and Bellamy's of the world although he is capable of layering on the dreaminess and hollering up a bit of bombast when it suits, and more importantly, where it fits. Again: composition is the keystone to this album's success.
We Should Have Destroyed Our Generals And Not Their Enemies is being officially launched with a free-entry party is TONIGHT! at the Druids Arms, Brighton.

Monsters Build Mean Robots - Psalm 57...
The new single from Monsters Build Mean Robots, one of our favourite bands based arounds these here Brighton parts (Chichester actually...mostly), is available as a free download from their website.
HERE
Just enter your email address into the box for an email with the download link. Don't worry. They're beautiful people, they won't bite. They will furnish you with five minutes of beautiful loops and guitar tones.
The track is called Psalm 57 (or) All That Gold Did Not Help Your Soul!. It sounds less like the ambient post rockisms of the MBMR album that had us fall in love with them (keep looking way down that link). Instead the skeleton of guitar lines that were previously buried underneath the pillowy ambience of their debut album are now out on the surface, exposed like industrial architecture atop the textural body in a similar departure that of last years acoustic-song-style Sigur Ros of Með Suð í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaus, which is also exceptionally lovely. Sigur Ros never dip into politics quite like this band and MBMR do it without the excessive orchestral arrangements - instead their music is built on a quiet intensity, all the more potent for it's subtlety and brittle, hauntingly wraith like elegance.
This track comes from the sessions that will produce their second album (hopefully some time this year). According to their website it should be A loopladen epic containing many tracks performed live by the group, this album has been hailed as their potential 'breakthrough' piece by the band.

This track has been mixed by MBMR and mastered by Ace from Skunk Anansie fame, and shows the direction the band have taken in the last year. Psalm 57 is playlisted on Brighton's JuiceFM and begins the build up to the long awaited second album......
They will be touring the UK to promote this single and album. Half of these dates are with the superb two piece math-blues-metal-skronk-rock band CHRIK who played an awesome house collapsingly raucous set at the NWfA Fringe Festival we DJd at in May.

Nice Weather For Airstrikes Fringe Festival Weekender
The Druids
Friday 22nd – Sunday 24th May
Jump: www.myspace.com/niceweatherforairstrikesrecords
Not For Resale will be providing DJ support for the Nice Weather For Airstrike's Fringe Festival weekender in May. The 3-day show will feature bands and artists from Brighton and from the Nice Weather label roster as well as a few from around the UK. We NFR deejays will be either fitting some choice tracks around the sounds of the bands helping to sculpt the day a signature or doing our best to add a bit of dissonance and get things jumping the fuck up, whichever we feel suits and whatever the crowd wants. We flex like that.
It's going to be a great event, we can feel it. There's a load of bands here we can and will vouch for ourselves ('Lorca, 'Anderson, 'Robots, Brenda, 'Stories, 'Emerson), and having been to the Nice Weather nights at the Hope we can attest to their tastes and will assure you this is going to be a whole weekend of awesomeness.
Here's the line-up's so far:
Friday 22nd - Last Days Of Lorca / Psyche Out Musicland Big Band / Everyone To The Anderson / Chrik
Saturday 23rd - Brenda / Appi / Monsters Build Mean Robots / A Genuine Freakshow
Sunday 24th - (Hopefully but unconfirmed..) Dennis Jones / Constellations / Jon Walbrin / Jacobs Stories / Joe Dunn / Bela Emerson
