When I started putting this week together I was very tempted to throw in a Cradle of Filth track off Vempire or Dark Faerytales in Phallustein and hail them as one of the legends of UK Black Metal - I mean, you've heard of them right? But then I remembered where Dani's troupe always fell over the edge into cheesiness or self-parodying pantomime, embarassing themselves, and no doubt the face of UKBM at the time. Hecate Enthroned had a similar sound - a symphonic melodic form of the genre - without any of the more theatrical trappings, the vocals are almost identical to Dani Filth's, that high pitched hysterical shriek, but the music behind them burns with deadly serious intent running cold and severe, like the harshest of seasons.
Recorded under the auspice of a full Winter's moon in January 1997, this is The Spell of the Winter Forest from the album The Slaughter of Innocence, A Requiem for the Mighty
