NEW TRACK: Light Asylum - Shallow Tears

Finally, a new release!  Shallow Tears is the lead 12" single from Light Asylum's long-awaited, highly anticipated self-titled debut album, due out in May on Mexican Summer.  The two-track single comes on suitably fetishistic limited edition white vinyl.

Dancing over the grave of the not-even-dead-yet Grace Jones, with a vocal comparisons all too apparent to avoid a reference, Shannon Funchess and Bruno Coviello return with another visceral tear-streaked symphony to emotion-haunted back alleys and dry-ice cloaked dancefloors. It starts with a peal of thunder,as dramatic an entrance as they could make, then the drums start pounding. This music is something else out there on its own. Even without Funchess' remarkable intonations there's enough resonant affect being squeezed out of the synths that each time she really opens up her lungs it reaches right into your chest and crushes your heart.  A less coked-up Cold Cave in introspective sensitive mode, Shallow Tears rolls forward in stately fashion, blowing up into alternating surges of drum crescendos and vocal multitracking that freezes time and blows out way before your ready for the affair to be over.

The B-side, Genesis, is far more restrained, with a creeping paranoid melody line picking its way over a jittery drum track that slowly slides into a silvery vocodered vocal climax. A little bit HTRK, but again, an entity all of itself.  It's the perfect foil to the grander A-side, a flawless 12" dropping a twin assault deep into your sensual perception, and the ultimate teaser to the10 track album, due out soon.

Order now from Mexican Summer.

VIDEO: Ford & Lopatin - World of Regret

Retro pastiche electronica AND a CGI dolphin? Haha. Yes please! Call me a hipster and crucify me on the Altar of Cool if you must, but I can't help myself. This looks like some crappy Wii game, Snack Attack or something. Absurd. Someone should make that - an eating game with different foods generated by the music you play through it. This is the demo for it.

Those eyes have the right expression at the end there.

PREVIEW: Ford & Lopatin - Channel Pressure

This news is about as exciting as it gets kids! Ford & Lopatin have served up a preview teaser to their post-GAMES release Channel Pressure on 7th June, on their own  Software label and Mexican Summer.  Like channel hopping through some parallel universe broadcast perpetually locked  to a lost 80's fm frequency, you get blasts of smooth blue-eyed pop, white collar soul, anthemic power chords all buffed up with the tech-know-how of this pair of recalcitrant retro-pioneers.

I like it a lot.

VIDEO: Star Slinger – Mornin

Here's a new video for Star Slinger's Mornin, taken from the 2010 debut Volume 1.  The video is directed by Alan Jensen who has produced visuals for the defining artists of chillwave including Blackbird Blackbird, Toro Y Moi, Washed Out, and Neon Indian - past artists of Mexican Summer, the New York based label that Star Slinger have now signed up to for their next release.  As a result, Jensen has now worked his nostalgic charm on the UK's sensual electronic outfit and has created this impassioned and wholly fitting video.

VIDEO: Noy Joy - Hawaii

The video has a Larry Clark feel to it, the track is shoegaze by way of Goo-era Sonic Youth, which is to say it has trash-poise and rock-noise in equal measure - This is Hawaii by No Joy.  The duo's rivetting little trip of an album, Ghost Blonde, was released this week on the excellent Mexican Summer and produced by Ravonettes man Sune Rose Wagner. The stars seem to have aligned over this one with a great auspicious, the results of this combination are even greater than they might read. Remember how truly awesome Love In A Trashcan was?  Well stick the last years worth of reverb devotion and distortion wash over it and BLAM.  It's a winner baby.
