LIVE VIDEO: Horseback - Invokation and Tyrant Symmetry
Horseback, at the Bull City Metal Fest at the Casbah in Durham, N.C., February 5th, 2011. Released one of my albums of the year - black/doom/ambient the like of which I never heard before. This was the first show with this lineup: Jenks Miller, guitar/vocals; John Crouch, drums; Richard James of Hog, guitar; Nick Petersen, bass.

LIVE VIDEO: Khmury @ Avant Club, Moscow
Here's some live action from Khmury playing at the Avant Club in Moscow, 24th November 2010. The video was shot and edited by Evgeny Rodin and Vadim Crasnitsky who both deserve massive props for this, it looks beautiful and sounds great too - not your usual shaky hand cam disrto-sound you tube clip at all. Well, not accidentally distorted anyway, this set descends into hyperblast cosmic carnage, taking in some classic rock riffs, fills and some bad-ass basslines, all captured crystal clear off the desk and synched to perfection.

LIVE VIDEO: Woe & Krieg @ Knitting Factory, NYC, 30 Oct 2010
Awesome pre-Halloween Black Metal gig to bring down the sky - Krieg and Woe playing together on the same night. Another ridiculously exciting gig that was thousands of miles too far to travel. two incredible bands that share a member in Woe's main man Chris Grigg playing drums for Krieg; both bands just released trancendental albums on Candlelight records - a sidestepped vision on Black Metal that sets them both above and beyond the recently fertile USBM scene, raising it up a level when it had only just plateauxed.

LIVE VIDEO: Gnod @ Supersonic 2010
Here's a video of Manchester's psychedelic neo-folk drone trance band Gnod playing - elevating it - live at Supersonic Festival, Birmingham. 23rd October 2010. This physically pulses, even from the video you can feel the speakers throb in thrall to the ritualistic (and I really don't want to use the word vibe here).....

Conan - Horseback Battle Hammer
Conan have been anointed the genre caveman battle doom. Primitive and crushingly heavy it is also pretty nimble when they want to be. They use quick changes in tempo like a killshot. Their album Horseback Battle Hammer is available on vinyl from Throne Records and CD through Aurora Borealis.
The album is one of the most riveting and exciting doom releases I've heard for some time with many majestic and arresting moments spread across the record; The whole vocal performance it's unique; it's always a long distant lonely cry echoing through the wilderness/across the battlefield; almost anguished but not piteously, almost Ozzy Sabbathesque but more mournful - a howl into the winds of the North. Maybe the best Doom vocal I have ever heard. Musically the tempo changes fuel the more euphoric moments; The switch up from crawl to canter in Satsumo, 3:25 into Dying Giant when the sludgy head nodding plod breaks into a even more catchy and densely grinding riff, on to a peak where the drums bludgeon along savagely, double kick coming in shortly after to drive the climax upwards. Then, just as you feel like you have heard all this bands tricks they drop a blitzed white out guitar scree around 8:30 into the final Sea Lord, cascading a sheer torrent of noise down off the speakers unexpectedly before intensifying relentlessly out to the finish. Inspired.
